Facing the onslaught of federal prosecutors, Hunter Biden finds himself engulfed in nine new criminal charges. These fresh accusations are part of the Department of Justice’s years-long investigation into President Joe Biden’s 53-year-old son.
The latest indictment, filed in California, accuses Biden of tax evasion, failure to pay taxes, and submitting false tax returns. In a damning 56-page court document, it’s alleged that Biden “engaged in a four-year scheme to evade paying at least $1.4 million in federal taxes he himself assessed as owing for the tax years 2016 through 2019” while splurging millions on a lavish lifestyle instead of settling his tax bills.
Previously, Biden faced federal charges in a Delaware court in September, involving three criminal counts related to allegedly lying about his drug use when purchasing a firearm in 2018, to which he pleaded not guilty. These charges, the first to be leveled against the current president’s child, combined with the latest tax-related accusations, come just months after the collapse of a plea deal Biden was set to agree to, aimed at avoiding jail time and further lengthy legal battles.
The charges against Hunter Biden cast an even darker legal shadow over the 2024 U.S. presidential election, where President Biden is expected to face off against former President Trump, who himself faces multiple criminal indictments and whose children are also embroiled in conflict-of-interest issues. House Republicans are also pursuing an impeachment inquiry against President Biden, alleging a “culture of corruption” involving the president and his son, though no evidence has been revealed to implicate the elder Biden in the younger’s alleged wrongdoing.
